Our workshops are a great addition to the science curriculum at any stage and contribute to many of the goals set out in the Curriculum for Excellence. Each workshop comprises of a combination of age-appropriate information, hands-on experiences using microscopes, models or other demonstration materials, games, and opportunities for children to contribute their own ideas. I want to engage the children through my own love and enthusiasm for all things marine.

Choose from existing topics or contact me with your own ideas for custom-made presentations. I’m always happy to hear from you!

Nursery

40 - 60 min workshop

We offer workshops of varying durations. For example, in our Microscopic Wonder Worlds workshops we look at living marine organisms under a microscope and have a hands-on exploration with a range of large scale models of microscopic organisms. We play games such as Micro-Splat and make a bunting that can be hung up in the classroom as a reminder of everything the kids have learned.

High school

40 - 60 min workshop

High-school workshops incorporate talking about oceans and how scientists study them. They also consist of demonstrations and hands-on handling of models and organisms. For example for the Microscopic Wonder Worlds workshop we look at a range of organisms under a microscope and as 3D models and develop ideas together how these organisms interact with their environment and what their role is in a range of marine ecosystems. We play a variety of Powerpoint quizes and try to see the ocean from the perspective of a microscopic organism.

Primary school

40 - 60 min workshop

Each workshop comprises of a combination of age-appropriate information, hands-on experiences and opportunities for children to contribute their own ideas. For example, in our Microscopic Wonder Worlds workshops we look at living marine organsims under a microscope before exploring large 3D printed models in more detail. We talk about the role of microorganisms in various marine habitats, play games such as Micro-Bingo and create a bunting out of our favourite micro-organisms which can be hung in the classroom as a reminder of everything the children have learned.

Adults

40 - 60 min workshop

Workshops for adults start with a presentation about oceans and how scientists study them. They also incorporate demonstrations and hands-on handling of models and organisms. For example, for the Microscopic Wonder Worlds workshop we look at a range of organisms under a microscope and as 3D models and develop ideas together how these organisms interact with their environment, and what their role is in a range of marine ecosystems. We play a variety of Powerpoint quizes and create an artwork based on the beauty of microscopic structures.

Climate Change

40 - 60 min workshop

These workshops are aimed at older primary school students, high-school students and adult audiences.

We talk about the scientific process behind climate models, from data collection to the publishing of results. Using a specialist software program, we simulate a range of different climate scenarios based on different input data. With the help of a range of demonstration materials we also learn about ocean acidification, and how scientists determine its effects on a marine organisms. We then talk about the combined effect of climate change and ocean acidification on marine ecosystems. We round up the workshop by discussing climate science sceptics and fake news, and by developing tools to help us judge scientific news and how to respond when we are confronted with climate change sceptics.
